Hearthstone Iron Co. was founded in 2014 to put a single product back into American kitchens: a working cast iron skillet, made the way the old ones were made, by people whose name is on the building.

The skillet is hand-poured in sand at our foundry on the edge of Cleveland's industrial flats, by a small crew of eleven craftsmen with a combined 187 years of foundry experience. Every pan is milled to a mirror-smooth interior — the trick that's missing from every mass-market cast iron in the supermarket — and hand-seasoned with grass-fed beef tallow before it leaves the shop.

We don't make any other products. We don't make multiple lines. We make this one skillet, in three sizes, the same way every Tuesday.

02 · What makes it different

Four things most cast iron skips.

The mass-market skillet at your local home goods store costs $25 and shows it. Here is the difference, on the pan you cook with every day.

Milled smooth.

The interior is milled to a polished finish after pouring — the way every American skillet was made before 1957. Eggs slide. Steaks release. The texture you feel on the brand-X pan is sand, not iron.

Hand-poured.

Sand-cast, one pan at a time, with no thin spots and no warp. Each skillet comes off the line at our spec for thickness and weight, not within a tolerance loose enough to ship the bad ones.

Pre-seasoned with beef tallow.

Three coats of grass-fed beef tallow polymerised at 525°F. Most "pre-seasoned" cast iron uses soy or canola — they're cheaper and they fail faster. Tallow is what your grandfather's pan was seasoned with.

Twenty-five year warp warranty.

If it ever warps off flat — heat-cycle, thermal shock, a careless restaurant — we replace it. No exclusions on first-owner use. The seasoning is on you; the iron is on us.

Honest answers.

What size should I get?

For one to two people, the 10″ is right. For most kitchens (the family of four, the cooking-for-friends crowd), the 12″ is the daily driver — and the one we sell the most of by a wide margin. The 14″ is for serious volume cooking — a whole brisket, a chicken-and-potatoes oven roast, a paella. If you only buy one, get the 12″.

How is this different from a Lodge?

Lodge is a fine, honest, cheap cast iron — we have used them and respect them. The main difference: Lodge is sand-cast and not milled, which means the interior is rough and the food sticks until the pan develops a thick seasoning layer (which can take a year of daily cooking). Hearthstone is milled smooth at the factory and pre-seasoned with three coats of beef tallow. You cook on it like a non-stick from week one.

Will it work on my induction stove?

Yes — cast iron is the original induction-compatible cookware. Works on gas, electric, induction, in any oven up to 750°F, and over a wood campfire if you're feeling ambitious. Avoid the dishwasher and ceramic glass at extreme temperature swings.

How do I season it / care for it?

The pan ships pre-seasoned. After each use: hot water, a stiff brush or scrubber, dry on the burner for 30 seconds, rub a thin layer of any cooking oil over the inside, wipe with a paper towel, put away. Every six months or so, a re-seasoning in the oven at 450°F for an hour will keep it tight. You'll find a printed care card in the box.

What's the warranty?

25-year warranty against warp, cracking, or manufacturing defect. If the pan ever fails on us in a non-cosmetic way, we replace it free, no shipping cost to you. The seasoning is on you (it's not warranted, but it's also re-establishable in any oven in under two hours).
